What Makes a Correction Actionable

Corrections are the most useful thing anyone sends this site, and the ones that get fixed fastest all contain the same four things:

• The page and the exact figure. A URL plus the number as it appears, rather than a general objection to the conclusion.
• Which index you are comparing against. NOAA publishes weekly Niño-region values on two conventions at once: the relative table (rel_wksst9120.txt), which CPC's ENSO products have quoted since February 2026, and the conventional table (wksst9120.for), which was never switched. In mid-2026 they differ by roughly 0.8°C. A near-uniform offset across all four regions means the two figures are different indices, not a revision.
• The season or week the value refers to. Weekly values are centred on a date, not ended on one, and seasonal RONI and ONI are three-month overlapping means. A weekly number and a seasonal number for "now" are not the same measurement and will not match.
• The source you believe is right, ideally the agency file itself.

Anything that turns out to be a real error is fixed and logged publicly in the corrections log, with what was published, what replaced it, and why. Nothing is silently overwritten. The full sourcing and review process is set out in the editorial standards.

Reuse and Citation

Charts, tables and figures from this site may be used with attribution and a link to the page they came from. If you are citing a numeric value, please also cite the NOAA or partner-agency file it derives from, which is linked on every page that carries data. Values on this site are revised whenever the upstream series is revised, so a citation should carry the date it was retrieved.
